In addition to the secession myth, Texans always brag about how they could theoretically divide their state into five separate states. This would, of course, be a disaster creating eight more Senators from Texas, among other horrible consequences. I kind of wish our forefathers had drive a harder bargain and also allowed the rest of the states to divide Texas up and redistribute it. The Panhandle by culture fits in better with Oklahoma and should be a part of that state.  Similarly, East Texas makes more sense as a part of Arkansas. West Texas should become part of New Mexico (Marfa by itself would balance out the southern New Mexico/northern New Mexico arts and culture scene so long dominated by Santa and Taos, and the Big Bend area just fits better in NM). North Texas can remain Texas, or abandon the baggage-laden "Texas" brand entirely and just call itself "Dallas". The strip from Austin through San Marcos and New Braunfels to San Antonio can also be given stateh...

There's often an odd symmetry, I've noticed, to life in PDX.

There's often an odd symmetry, I've noticed, to life in PDX. Today's theme was "Pigstuff". We walked the beagle puppy up by Piggott's Castle. (The older beagle isn't that into hill walks.) Then, we came home and walked Clyde, the older beagle. Downstairs, at the end of the South Park Blocks, a real-live fat pig was quietly grazing. Here he is, in front of Shattuck Hall. (I had to run upstairs to get my camera. Lesson learned: never go anywhere in this town without a camera.)

I know what it means when a writer says they are awaiting the proofs of their book from the publisher, but it's more amusing to me to pretend that they don't remember writing the book and are waiting for the publisher to verify it.

We are so spoiled in this town.

We are so spoiled in this town. The Farmer's Market moved back down to our end of the park blocks today and I went down. I was walking around thinking, "It's so small, still! No Pine Street Biscuits, yet!" Then I was in line behind a woman who said, "I'm from Palo Alto, and I go to our Farmer's Market, but this one is HUGE !"

Today I learned that there is a Portland Geek Council.

Today I learned that there is a Portland Geek Council. Of course there is. I kind of think they should move City Council out of City Hall, and just let the Geek Council run this town. http://www.pgc3.org/

We have had a sick child for a couple of days.

We have had a sick child for a couple of days. #Clydethebeagle was hacking and throwing up mucus and looking at me with his sad beagle eyes, but I couldn't fix it. We took him to the vet last night and he's doing better today. He had a chest x-ray and has some heart issues, but this is not really a surprise since a) he is old, and b) has been accused for three years by three different vets of having a heart murmur. For now it is not bad enough to need medication, but we are supposed to observe his breathing and exercise. The first won't be too hard: we just have to count how many times he breathes while asleep. The second, though, is more problematic: Clyde was never really a fan of exercise to begin with, so it's kind of guesswork to judge if he has started to become what is apparently called "exercise averse".

Apparently, one is now allowed to make bad jokes about someone's death as soon as five minutes after or as long as 150 years after if they incoherently mumble "too soon?" immediately after the joke.

"Crows are a bird that have done amazingly well in urban environments," said Bob Sallinger, conservation director for the Audubon Society of Portland. I'll have to agree with that.  They certainly love to hang out in my downtown Portland 'hood. http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2013/03/the_urban_crow_highly_visible.html

Engadget and its readers have totally jumped the shark. The problem isn't that G+ and Picasa are being integrated; it's that they weren't integrated much better at least a year ago. http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/05/google-picasa-url-redirect/
