Just realized I hadn't introduced myself.

Just realized I hadn't introduced myself. I managed to be pretty far left in Texas for thirty years, but you can only swim against the stream for so long. Portland is easier, and I love the mountains and rivers. You still have to fight for liberal values here, but at least it's a fight that can be won, sometimes.

So, I'm trying to refrain from gloating to the Texan Cassandras who prophesied WEATHER DOOM when we announced we were moving to PDX. They'll be buried under 12 inches of snow by this time tomorrow and we're enjoying nice springlike weather in the PNW.

Once upon a time, we had these publications called newsweeklies.

Once upon a time, we had these publications called newsweeklies.  Okay, they all still exist in some fashion, but they are a shadow of what they once were. There were three: US News & World Report, Newsweek and The Daily Beast (minus the Daily Beast part), and TIME. For while in the 80s, US News & World Report  would run gloating advertisements every time Newsweek , and TIME ran very similar covers. Willamette Week  and Portland Mercury reminded me of that this week.
