The veterinarian's a block away from us, and we regularly walk past him on #AustintheBeagle's walks. I took Austin for a walk today. He sniffed in the direction of the pet clinic and then extricated himself from his harness like Houdini, and started running toward the building. I'm not sure he understands that that's the vet. He seems to think it's just a building with a lot of other animals who probably want to play with him. I wish I had a quarter of his optimism.

Last night I dreamed that the entire incoming presidential line of succession suddenly had to leave the country "on business" and didn't come back. Somehow it was decided that a new president would be elected by committee and I was assigned to the committee. We came up with a few candidates and were meeting them at this row of townhouses. There was another row of townhouses behind, and a man walked out in a bowler and long black topcoat. He announced himself as Warren G. Harding, and said maybe he wanted to be president, and why hadn't we considered him? "You're not dead?" I asked. "No," he replied. "Just laying low. But I think it's time to get back to it. That Teapot Dome stuff doesn't seem so bad anymore."
